Maldives- China Bonhominess Implications

Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu expressed gratitude to China and India for supporting the country's weak economy and emphasized the significance of both nations in resolving the island nation's impending debt issue and fostering its future growth.

President Muizzu stated at an official event on July 26 to commemorate the 59th anniversary of the nation's independence that China and India offer the most assistance in helping the nation pay off its debt.

After taking office last year, Mr. Muizzu ran an anti-India campaign platform that called for the expulsion of about 80 Indian military personnel who were using helicopters and donated Dornier aircraft.
China, on the other hand, has increased its diplomatic ties with the Maldives since Mr. Muzzu, who is generally recognized as a pro-Beijing politician, came to office.

He travelled to China early this year, and while there, the two nations strengthened their ties to become a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership. Beijing also signed 20 agreements, including one granting Beijing military support, which greatly alarmed India because the Maldives is Beijing's closest strategically located neighbour in the Indian Ocean.
Additionally, he allowed Chinese research vessels—also known as "spy ships"—to dock in Maldives waters following a year-long prohibition by Sri Lanka.

India's assistance to the Maldives should be viewed as a calculated action. China is utilizing the Maldives for its own nefarious ends. Everyone is conscious of Sri Lanka's situation. China was taking advantage of Sri Lanka's weak economic situation, which was a serious blow to the country. Although Sri Lanka may have realized that, it was already too late. China never murders someone for no apparent cause.

Through Sri Lanka, China first drew closer to India; now, it is using the Maldives. China wants to monitor India closely, which is why it has "spy ships" in the Maldives. China is unquestionably a threat to India, and we intend to lessen its sway over the Indian Ocean.

China was the one that used Sri Lanka, and they were completely indebted to China. China is creating SEZs in Pakistan in an effort to draw closer to India. Pakistan is to be used as a puppet by China. Whether or not Pakistan agrees with China's policies, Pakistan will never be able to resist it.

China wants to weaken the cohesion and might of India's regional alliances by extending its influence from the East Sea to the Indian Ocean. China has increased trade and diplomatic ties with many nations, including the Maldives, in order to secure energy routes through these regions.

After these two instances, the Maldives will now be the next. India will undoubtedly be under pressure to respond to China appropriately. At the same time, India is bolstering its armed forces on the strategically significant Lakshadweep islands, which are located around 130 kilometers north of the Maldives. The Indian Navy has disclosed its intentions to send a naval force based on Minicoy Island in order to improve "monitoring activities" in the area.

The Indian Navy declared in March 2024 that it would be stepping up its presence on strategically important islands close to the Maldives. Situated in the Lakshadweep archipelago of India, the recently commissioned INS Jatayu began operations on March 6 and is intended to serve as a stand-alone maritime unit. By taking this calculated risk, India is strengthening its naval power to keep a watchful stance and anticipate any threats in the area.

India ought to give top priority to preparing for the unavoidable effects of Chinese influence in the Indian Ocean. By giving diplomatic engagement, economic cooperation, and security alliances top priority, India should work to fortify its ties with the Maldives and lessen China's influence.

How can we forget China’s betrayal when China attacked us in the name of “Hindi Chini Bhai- Bhai”.

The fact is that China cannot be trusted owing to its strategic ambiguity and plausible deniability. practices which can seen through the use of its projects like BRI.

Jai Hind!
