The Art of Strategy: Celebrating International Chess Day
We're commemorating "International Chess Day" today. International Chess Day is observed on July 20th of each year to honor this age-old game and its influence on society worldwide. On this day in July 1924, the International Chess Federation was founded in Paris. In 1966, UNESCO also recognized this day. This day is observed worldwide to encourage mutual understanding, cultural interchange, and intellectual growth.
The history of chess dates back to the sixth century. This game originated in India and has been played since ancient times. It first made its way to Persia before traveling through Arab countries to Europe.
Today millions of people play chess and this game has become popular in the world leaving behind the barriers of language, culture and traditions. Chess,
often regarded as the "Game of Kings," transcends mere entertainment;
it serves as a profound mirror reflecting the complexities of life itself. Each
move on the chessboard echoes decisions made in the corridors of power, in the
classrooms of academia, and in the depths of personal relationships. It teaches
us not only the art of foresight but also the valour of patience, the virtue of
perseverance, and the necessity of adaptability.
Today the International Chess Federation (FIDE) along with several top chess
streamers from different federations, and clubs are going to attempt the
Guinness World Record for the most number of players attempting for International
Rating.
As a Chess player I have learned a lot of things. Through
chess, I have learned the art of decision-making, planning and anticipation,
understanding that every move must be thoughtfully considered in the context of
future possibilities. It has taught me the value of patience and perseverance,
as victories are often the result of long-term strategy and resilience in the
face of setbacks. Chess sharpens my problem-solving skills, pushing me to think
several steps ahead and evaluate multiple scenarios. I have also earned my
State Chess Coach Certificate from the Gujarat State Chess Association (being
the youngest to do so at the age of 22.
It also instills discipline and focus, as concentration is crucial to success on the board. Moreover, chess has shown me the importance of adaptability and flexibility; sometimes, the best-laid plans must be adjusted in response to an opponent’s unexpected move. Ultimately, chess has provided me with a deeper appreciation for the complexity of decision-making and the beauty of strategic thinking, lessons that extend far beyond the checkered board into everyday life.
So happy Chess Day to all chess lovers.
Jai Hind!
