Where did our Olympians Go?

Manu Bhaker India’s double medal sensation at the Paris Olympics 2024 has shown the definition of perseverance, patience and dedication to the world from facing a pistol malfunction at the Tokyo Olympics to the redemption at Paris the one figure apart from her parents is her coach Jaspal Rana.

Jaspal Rana a veteran of Indian shooting and pistol coaching has raised an interesting question while giving an interview to the Bridge Sports said that where is Jitu Rai where is Saurabh Chaudhary who have immensely contributed to Shooting.

Somewhere down the line the system currently needs to create an environment where not only the talent nourishes or sustains but also creates an ecosystem where talent and experience co-exist. It is a systematic failure according to the veteran. If shooting which is the second costliest sport after golf has to sustain then the responsible authorities need to take cognizance and act so that shooting can sustain in India. Leave shooting asides this approach of talent and experience should be adopted in all other domains of sports.

India needs to start at aiming to become a sports playing population than sports loving population. This will enable a skilled population which can greatly contribute to the aim of “Viksit Bharat”.

Starting from grassroots has to be the priority. While organization of Khelo India Games has been a good initiative. We need to boost our infrastructure at the grassroots level from identifying young talents to educating these determined individuals emphasis has to be given on creating a more active network of the district sports officers to organizing competitive leagues. Jaspal Rana’s statement highlights the unnoticed reality of Indian sports which needs to be looked upon.

The author himself is a national level chess player and State Certified Chess Coach and agrees with the nature and alms at which Jaspal sir spoke to know more read his interview on the bridge sports website.
