National Sports Day: Why India is Still Chasing the Medals Tally?

India gets together to commemorate National Sports Day on August 29 every year. This celebration honors Major Dhyan Chand, one of the greatest hockey players of all time, on his birthday. In addition to commemorating his birth anniversary, National Sports Day highlights the value of sports and physical activity in our daily lives. It is a good idea to consider how important sports are for creating national cohesion, encouraging a healthy lifestyle, and motivating the next generation to get active as we commemorate National Sports Day in 2024.

The man known as "The Wizard of Hockey," Major Dhyan Chand, was born on August 29, 1905. He became one of the best-known Indian players in the world for his outstanding hockey skills. Further, Major Dhyan Chand was an important player in India's three straight Olympic gold medal wins in 1928, 1932, and 1936. He became a legend in the sports world because of his unmatched accuracy in scoring goals and ball control.

Major Dhyan Chand started playing in 1926, and his career spanned till 1948. He represented India in 185 games and scored a whopping 400 goals during his career. In 2012, the Indian government declared his birthday as National Sports Day in recognition of his contributions to Indian sports. His commitment, self-control, and passion for the game are celebrated on this day, motivating athletes throughout the nation.

We can win very few Olympic medals in a country with 140 corers. It's a worrying issue that is consistently disregarded when it should be. Although we don't fully sponsor athletes, we nonetheless demand medals from them. We witnessed the cheering fans in Mumbai after the cricket team won the World Cup. However, in other sports, similar affection, respect, and adoration are absent. Cricket is played in very few nations, and it goes without saying that winning a World Cup is easier than taking home an Olympic gold medal.

In our nation, there is still no sports culture. Both financial support and facilities are severely lacking. The government of Odisha is the only one supporting our hockey squad. This needs to be handled quite carefully. Politics should not be involved in second sports. Sports in our nation have suffered greatly as a result of this kind of indulgence.

Even with the government's best efforts, there is still much work to be done to promote sports. Is it not a disgrace that we seldom discuss our Olympians? They are only recalled during the Olympic Games. Major Dhyanchand, the renowned player, is an example of the same. I'm still waiting for Major Dhyanchand to receive the "Bharat Ratna" award.

 Jai Hind!
